Directions

What are Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are normal vascular structures in the anal canal, which help with stool control. They act as "cushions" composed of blood vessels and connective tissue. Although most people think hemorrhoids are abnormal, everyone has them. However, the hemorrhoidal cushions remain unnoticed until they become enlarged and inflamed. At this point, they are considered a health problem.

What causes hemorrhoids?

Internal hemorrhoids form when blood vessels of the anal cushions swell. This causes the supporting hemorrhoidal tissue to increase until the enlarged mass of tissues and blood vessels protrude into the anal canal. It is unclear how external hemorrhoids form.

What are inflamed hemorrhoid symptoms?

The anal canal contains two types of nerves. The visceral nerves (rectal side) and somatic nerves (near the anus). Visceral nerves are like the nerves of the intestines and do not sense pain, only pressure. Somatic nerves are like the nerves of the skin and can sense pain.
