I just wanted to take the time to write and let you know that I am a very skeptical person and I had searched and searched for my wife a product that was natural and would help her in reducing her largely raised scarring after breast augmentation with a breast lift surgery. The Doctor had told us that there would be scarring after surgery and that it would take a few years before the scars "maybe" flattened and faded. For over eight months her scars, were largely raised, very dark purplish/red and this was disturbing to her. She had tried two different ointments, purchased from a Pharmacy for a few months with no effect at all on the raised scars or their coloring.

What are scars?

Scars are areas of fibrous skin that replaced normal skin after injury. Acne, wounds, surgery, or burns can injure skin. When skin is injured, skin cells multiply to replace the old skin. These new skin cells contain collagen (protein). Collagen consists of fibers to strengthen the layer of skin below the surface. For injured skin, the collagen produced becomes thicker. This thickness causes scarring.

Are there different types of scars?
After skin becomes injured, scar formation is a natural part of the healing process. How the scar heals depends upon the depth and size of the injury, the location of the injury, age, heredity, and even skin color.

Below are the different scar types:

• Contracture Scars: The skin heals the wound by contracting, causing a pulled taught appearance. They may go deeper, affecting the underlying muscles and nerves, which restricts movement. These scars usually remain confined to the margin of the wound and are often the result of burn injuries.
• Hypertrophic Scars: These scars are usually redder in appearance and are usually slightly raised and thickened. They usually remain confined to the margin of the wound.
• Keloid Scars: Keloid scars are excess collagen due to an overproduction of new scar tissue. Keloids may spread beyond the wound site. They usually appear after surgery, but they can appear from slight inflammation such as from a pimple on the chest, burns, or piercings. Although harmless, keloid scars tend to be itchy, tender, or even painful to the touch. Keloids occur more often in darker skinned individuals.
• Recessed scars: This scar is recessed or crater shaped. The indent is caused when fat and muscle under the wound is damaged or lost. Such as in severe acne scars.
